The Mechanics of Image Compression
Image compression reduces the cost of storing and transmitting digital images. It is a critical component of web architecture, representing a balance between visual fidelity and load times.
Lossy Compression and the Discrete Cosine Transform
Lossy compression algorithms achieve extreme size reduction by permanently discarding data that is less perceptible to human vision. The JPEG pipeline applies chroma subsampling, 8x8 block Discrete Cosine Transforms (DCT), and quantization matrices to eliminate high-frequency variations.
Lossless Compression: PNG & DEFLATE
PNG uses spatial filtering combined with the DEFLATE algorithm (combining LZ77 sliding window dictionary lookups and Huffman entropy coding) to compress image data with bit-for-bit exact reconstruction.
